Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
