Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the right to challenge certain decisions made by the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent example occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
