The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show nears, one notices a clamor for introducing of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything in 2014
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
