An defence official has revealed that the MoD is actively investigating the potential security risks associated with Chinese cars, and personnel have been told to avoid discussing classified information in any cars.
Security Advice for MoD Staff
During a recently aired interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to discuss classified information while travelling in China-made cars.
He explained that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any kind of car, due to the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Broader Defence Background
The announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off buses and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been shining lasers at RAF aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by defence officials.
