Fed Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
